Why Does Crankshaft Precision Matter?
The crankshaft is the foundation of every engine’s bottom end. Bearing life, oil pressure, vibration, and ultimately how long the engine survives all trace back to how well the crank was machined.
Out-of-round journals, incorrect taper, poor surface finish, or a bent crank will destroy a fresh bearing set in short order, no matter how good the rest of the rebuild is.
Our process is built to deliver a crankshaft that drops into a fresh rebuild and stays in service.
Every crank we touch is inspected, measured, machined to spec, and inspected again before it goes back out the door.
Our Crankshaft Services
1. Precision Grinding (Standard & Undersize)
We grind rod and main journals to OEM standard or undersize specs depending on the customer’s needs and the condition of the crank. Journals are held to proper diameter, taper, and out-of-round tolerances, with fillet radii preserved to factory dimensions. A correctly ground crank is the difference between a long-lived bottom end and a premature bearing failure.
2. Polishing & Surface Finish
Polishing is the final step after grinding, and the single biggest factor in how long the bearings will live.
We finish journals to surface roughness values within OEM specifications — smooth enough for the bearing to develop and hold a proper hydrodynamic oil film. Polishing is also available on its own for cranks that measure in spec but need their finish refreshed.
3. Magnetic Particle Crack Inspection
Every crank that comes through our shop is checked with magnetic particle inspection (MPI) to catch cracks before they become catastrophic failures in the field. A crack in a journal fillet or throw can grow under load and break the crank in two — MPI is the cheapest insurance against that outcome, and it is built into our standard process at no extra step for the customer.
4. Straightening
Cranks bend. Hydraulic lock, severe overheat, harmonic damage, or a dropped core can leave a crankshaft out of true even when the journals themselves are still usable. Rather than scrap an otherwise good crank, we straighten it back into specification — a cost-effective alternative to sourcing a replacement, particularly on large or hard-to-find cores.
5. Individual Crankshaft Balancing
We offer dynamic balancing of the crankshaft on its own, separate from a full rotating assembly balance. This is the right service when a customer is reusing a crank with new rods or pistons of different weight, when counterweights have been modified, or when the engine is being built for high - RPM or high - load duty where every gram of imbalance translates into destructive vibration.
A balanced crank transmits less stress into the main bearings, runs smoother, and lets the engine make rated power without the harmonic losses that shorten everything around it.
