Whether you're rebuilding an early ISX DOHC, a later ISX SOHC, or a current X15, our team has the equipment and experience to support your engine from machining through final assembly.

Why the Cummins 15L Needs a Specialist

The ISX and X15 are durable, high-mileage platforms, but each generation carries its own well-documented wear points — and a general-purpose rebuild tends to miss them. Like most modern wet-liner diesels, these engines depend on precise block geometry to keep the head gasket sealed: counterbore depth, liner nip height (protrusion), and deck flatness all have to sit within a narrow window for the fire ring to hold clamp load. Let any of those drift — from block wear, a prior rebuild done to loose tolerances, or age — and the result is the same familiar failure: combustion gas escaping past the gasket and coolant finding its way into the oil.

The 15L platforms add a second common failure path: cylinder liner cavitation. Combustion-driven vibration in the liner wall causes microscopic bubbles to form and collapse against the water side of the liner, pitting and eventually perforating it from the outside in. Left unaddressed, a rebuild can go right back to failure even with a brand-new liner installed, simply because the underlying vibration and clamping issues were never corrected.

A proper 15L rebuild treats these as engineering problems to be solved, not just parts to be swapped. That's what our process is built around.

Machine Work

Rotating Assembly Balancing

We balance the crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons together as a matched assembly.
A balanced rotating assembly runs smoother, transmits less destructive vibration into the main bearings

and accessory drives, and lets the engine make rated power without the harmonic losses that shorten

bearing and crank life. For high-horsepower or high-mileage applications, this is one of the cheapest

insurance policies a builder can buy.

Crankshaft Grinding

We grind cranks to OEM standard or undersize on both rod and main journals, hold proper fillet

radius, polish to spec, and inspect for cracks before they leave. A correctly ground crank with the right

surface finish is the difference between a long-lived bottom end and a premature bearing failure.

Counterbore Cutting

Counterbore restoration is one of the most important services we offer for the C15. The counterbore

is the machined ledge in the block that supports the liner flange and sets liner protrusion above the

deck. Over time, that ledge erodes, sinks, or becomes uneven — and when it does, the head gasket

fire ring loses the clamp load it needs to seal. We re-cut counterbores to factory depth and flatness,

restoring proper liner protrusion and giving the head gasket the foundation it needs to stay sealed

under cylinder pressure.

Upper and Lower Block Sleeving

When parent bores are scored, oversized, or cracked beyond what a counterbore cut can address, sleeving saves the casting. We install press-fit upper and lower sleeves to restore the bore to factory dimensions — turning a block that would otherwise be scrap back into a serviceable core, and giving shops a cost-effective alternative to sourcing a replacement block.

Connecting Rod Reconditioning

We recondition connecting rods - resizing big-end bores, replacing bushings, and checking for straightness and cracks - rather than defaulting to new rod purchases on every build. A properly reconditioned rod meets the same tolerances as new at a fraction of the cost, without cutting corners on inspection.

Block Resurfacing

We resurface decks to restore flatness and the correct finish for gasket sealing. A warped or out-of-spec deck undermines every other head gasket fix on the list — resurfacing is the baseline that makes the rest of the work count.

Cylinder Head Resurfacing

The same principle applies on the head side. We resurface cylinder heads to correct warp and achieve the proper finish, so the gasket seats evenly across every cylinder instead of fighting an uneven surface from day one.

Cylinder Head Services

Our head work covers full disassembly, inspection, and reassembly,
with the following services available depending on application:

  • O-Ringed Cylinder Heads — we cut a precision groove around each combustion chamber and install a stainless o-ring that bites into the head gasket fire ring, dramatically increasing localized clamp load. This is the long-term fix for chronic head gasket failures on built or hard-working 15L engines, addressing the clamp-load problem directly rather than hoping a new gasket holds where the last one didn't.
  • Valve Seat and Guide Machining — precision-cut seats and guides restore proper valve sealing and control oil consumption through the valvetrain.
  • Resurfacing — corrects warp and restores the proper finish for gasket sealing.
  • OEM and Upgraded Valve Components — including options suited to higher-EGT or heavily-tuned applications where stock valves are more likely to burn or stretch.

Premium Parts

Our parts program follows the same logic as our machine work: solve known 15L problems at the parts level so they don't come back as warranty claims or roadside breakdowns.

Coated Components

Ceramic-Coated Piston Crowns

Ceramic coating turns the piston crown into a thermal barrier, reflecting combustion heat back into the chamber instead of letting it soak into the piston and cooling jets. The result is more complete combustion, better fuel efficiency, and lower thermal load on the piston — real money for fleets tracking miles per gallon.

Dry-Film-Coated Piston Skirts

A dry film lubricant coating reduces friction between skirt and cylinder wall, cutting parasitic loss and extending the life of both surfaces. It also carries its own lubricity, giving the skirt protection during cold starts, dry starts, or a momentary loss of oil pressure — the moments that cause scuffing and seizure on an uncoated skirt.

Coated Engine Bearings

Coated rod and main bearings carry the same protection into the bottom end. The dry film layer survives the first revolutions on a fresh start and protects against marginal-lubrication events — cold starts, dry starts after an oil change, or a brief drop in oil pressure — that wreck conventional bearings. For an engine that spends its life starting cold or running hard, this is cheap insurance against the most expensive kind of failure.

BUILT FOR EVERY CUMMINS 15L PLATFORM

Whether you need complete machine work, premium parts, or both, Spring Garden Repair is your trusted source for ISX Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC), ISX Single Overhead Cam (SOHC), and X15 engine solutions. From precision machining to premium aftermarket components, we help keep your Cummins engine running at its best.

In Summary

Our work on the Cummins 15L platforms is built around what actually fails on these engines. We restore the block geometry that head gaskets depend on, we offer o-ringed heads that fix the head-joint problem at its source, and we coat the components that see the most thermal and friction stress. The result is a rebuild that lasts longer, runs more efficiently, and earns its keep across the ISX DOHC, ISX SOHC, and X15 platforms alike.
